So I've thought and thought and researched and I'm now moving slowly towards a 2007 Hornet.  Has ABS, fly screen, crash bungs, tank cover (in gold with 3D Honda Wing logo), scottoiler and optimate cable.  Asked dealer if he could improve the price but he's offered to throw in a Givi Monokey topbox with rack for free.  This means it'll have everything I need to use straight off and the lack of fairing and presence of crash bungs etc...will mean it's better protected.

On sale from Doble Motorcycles which seems to be a good outfit.

Dobles aren't too shabby.

If you flan on buying anything from them, join the Hornet's Nest. Subscribed members get a discount as Dobles are the main sponsor. OK!

WHY spend that much?  £1500 will get you something cracking to learn to ride on?
READ all the previous drop / crash posts from newbies.  Not many crashes but a LOT of drops.  Buy something it doesn't matter and also you can sell for the same money IF you dont like it or get fed up of in 3 months time!

Thanks for the advice.  My criterion are quite specific (for various reasons) so I need something which is a good all rounder, fun to ride and, most importantly, I can hold onto for 3+ years and enjoy as I grow into it.  I won't be trading up earlier than that for 'domestic' reasons....  Also the ABS is a welcome addition.  I've had a look at what £1500 buys but this sort of set up fits what I'm looking for the most.

If it suits you.. then go for it. You risk dropping any new bike.. old or new. new rider or long time biker. I've been riding for 32yrs.. have had this model bike since 1997.. and STILL managed to drop it last year. C'est la vie. was a moments lack of concentration that did it. no damage.. the bike has enough protection. picked it up.. got my breath back and carried on.

Cheers guys.  That's pretty much my logic too.  And my 'nod' to my liklihood of having a drop is to buy an non-faired bike with crash protectors.  From what I've read the Hornet seems a fun bike with a loyal following.  Will see if Dobles let me test ride just to ensure it doesn't match me.

You wont know in 30 minutes.  Knowing a bike takes a long time unless it really affects you.  I have tried loads for 30 mins and thought "want one" but between paying another £6 - £10k for part exing mine I always think mine is worth more.
Could I live with many of those I have tested?  Maybe in some cases and maybe not.
The Diavel was perfect or so I thought.  The wind resistance was low.  Seat was perfect height.  Engine STONKING.  But it bruised my tailbone and trapped a nerve.
Go for what you want at the end of the day.  it's your money.  you'll either find you are throwing it down the drain or you'll lose money on it but enjoy the bike.  You wont know until you do.  You may find after 5 months a hornet is too dull.
Maria had outgrown her 500 after 5 months yet she thought it way too powerful for the 1st 6 weeks.......  her 1st proper bike was a GSX1300 Busa which she thought she could ride.  She ended up much quicker on the 500

Don't worry about dropping it, if its going to happen it'll happen, newbie-ness wont make much difference!

Took me 2 years & onto my second bike before I dropped one! But it involved a lot of snow & ice - experience cannot overcome an absence of friction wink

Sounds like you know what you are after  OK!

Excellent! When do you get it? Take care and have fun...
It's great having your own bike and being able to ride when and where you want (er, weather permitting).
Though you may find that your daily commute is no quicker, due to a tendency to choose more "interesting" routes smile

Doesn't it just. QQ.. think about having a front 'fend extenda' put on the rear of the front mudguard.. it will reduce the amount of road muck that will inevitably be thrown up.
