Hi there,

I would definitely recommend the GPZ500, as a first bike.
I picked one up for £480 cash 'F' reg as a first bike and then rode it for 2 years whilst I looked at what I liked.
A plus to the GPZ500 and my current bike, ZZR600, is the low ride height.
I'm only 5'8" and on both I am able to put both feet flat on the ground, that has been dead handy!!!
If you do the DAS then you'll ride a 500cc bike and see that, in my opinion, they are not as scary as first feared!  toothy grin

i will reccomend the sv650 it's an awesome bike and dead fun too ride also incredibly forgiving cheap on insurance too 250's arnt much if any cheaper so i cant see the point youll tire of them quite quickly too much like hard work revving them hehe.

I am in a similar position to yoursellf regarding taking a restricted licence test,  I've toyed with the idea of what to do, and so far i think i've thought through almost every option I think.  I ride a 125, so though if it was alot cheaper i'd take it on a 125 that way i could either carry on on my 125 for the two years, or get a restricted bike for the two years, or go DAS. (See the link ref. telling the insurance you are on a 33bhp licence if you are on a bigger restricted bike) havn't really made my decision yet, but as to which bike I think as someone else said you may change your mind a number of times as to what type and size of bike to buy by the time you take a test, think it's best to get the test done first and see how you feel. I rushed into buying a Transalp as they were doing a very good deal on it prior to passing my test, glad i didn't nothing against the Transalp. I have since changed my mind a number  of times about the bike I will buy,  and until i've passed my test and ridden a few don't think I will be able to make a proper decision.

I've no problem my self doing the 125 test and maybe having a restricted bike if the 125 test is better for me. Or even ridng restricted.

Hiya, I've just come through the same situation as you.  Recently passed my test via DAS, so able to buy a bigger bike.

If you have a 125 already then you can practice the manoeuvring skills for Mod 1 by yourself and pay for some 2 hour lessons with an instructor to ensure your road skills are sufficient to pass the test.  This would be the cheapest option.  I failed my Mod 2 the first time round and had to pay, not only for the re-test fee, but the hire of bike and instructor time to take me out and re-do my Mod 2.  The additional cost came to £180 (on top of the DAS course cost).  From start to finish it cost me £800 to get my bike license, I could have probably halved that by buying a cheap 125, doing as I said above, and then selling on the bike.  However, for my size and use and intentions, I really needed something a bit more powerful so don't regret doing it the more expensive way.

Yeah, I'm changing my mind already. Going from riding a 125 to wanting a 250, to now wanting a 650.

I've been eying up some SV650's, nice bikes and like you say, cheap to insure.

Make sure you FIT the bike and that's not just feet, its control on lock to lock.
SV is a nice bike
