If the roads are clear, pretend they are laden with traffic and  take up proper positioning throughout the test.

Relax. Don't let yourself get tense. You'll find it harder to control the bike.

On the dreaded u-turn - look at where you want to go (i.e. right back down the road) and BELIEVE you will go there. And you actually will!

Always look where you want to go.
Check your speed regularly and the speed limit.
Make sure you visibly brake for unmarked cross roads.
Always cancel your indicators.
Don't pull over on double yellow lines or in a bus stop.

Try to relax and enjoy the ride.

The test will go much quicker than you think and although when people say I know you will find it difficult try your best by breathing, not hyperventaliting though, lol.
Remember to use those life savers, every time you change lane, every time you turn a corner, just give a check to make sure, it is for you just as much as it is to pass your test.
When instructors say to look where you want to go on your U-Turn, turn your head to look way down the road past where you want to finish, if you sit at your pc and have your shoulders and head straight, try turning your head to look behind you and you will see that if you RELAX your shoulders will follow, now think about what that means when you have a handlebar in your hands, you will go where you look :0) and you will do it, remember you only ever need to do it once and that is it.
So, RELAX and have fun, if you haven't heard the examiner, nod and he will repeat but repeat to yourself what he said as it helps to remember it.

Sorry I went on so much but good luck and lets us know how you get on

Ride at the speed limit where it's safe to do so. I know of someone who failed for travelling at 60 on a clear section of dual carriageway.

I heard that the examiner would rather you got 1 mile an hour over the speed limit than 1 mile under, be careful with this but I got 3 minors for lack of speed

Just ride like you normally do, and don't scare the examiner. Relax, it's only stuff you do every day.

Jeeze shone I just winced in sympathy, thts real painful.

I know this'll sound stupid but, if you are tense  BEFORE you start your test, do some warm up exercise's. I'll loosen your muscles up and reduce the tension.
Course you could go to the extreme and do a little Yoga by the kerbside but you might freak the examiner yikes

If you think you've made a mistake on your test, forget about it! dont dwell on it and concentrate on the rest of the test....chances are your 'mistake' might not be as bad as you think OK!

Make sure you have the right documents with you when you go for your test. I know,it may sound obvious but my instructor told me that he has had a few that didnt, and of course your test will not go ahead.

Ditto Rach, I forgot to turn off my indicator at one point but I fortunately sorted it before we got to the next turn but straight away I worried, then I relaxed, concentrated on the rest of the test and forgot about it, he never said a word, I don't know if he even noticed.

It was sore, but not hugely. I didn't realise it had ruptured till five months later, after taking my bike test!

make sure that if its your own bike your doing the test on that you check it thouroughly over and that everything is working as should be you don't want the bike to malfunction on a test maybe service it beforehand would be a goood idea.

« Reply #27 on: January 13, 2008, 05:01:52 PM »

In the summer drink a little and often, NOT a lot occasionally. Dehydration headaches will distract you and ruin your concentration. If you gulp down a lot of liquid in one go, you'll just pee most of it straight out without it being absorbed and used by your body.

In the winter make sure you've got the warm gear on. Riding when you're cold is as dangerous as drink driving.....your concentration goes and your muscles stiffen up not to mention just being plain uncomfortable. Stop often and get something warm down your gullet.

Check your tyre pressures regularly.

newbie question: Does the examiner want 2 hands on the handle bars at all times. Lets say the visor fogs up and you need to lift it up from time to time?

I had mine up and down at a few points and didn't get any minors. It's all about doing it at an appropriate time.
